Argument With Research Essay Why Do So Many NBA Players Go Broke? Clifton Hoy Many people are under the impression that all professional athletes have  accumulated an access to unlimited money throughout the course of their professional  careers. This is a complete myth, and the majority of athletes do not get to live these  lavish lifestyles for very long. Surprisingly enough, numerous athletes go broke quickly  after their careers have ended. Studies have shown that NFL players tend to go broke just  three years after their careers have ended. NBA players are doing slightly better, and  studies show that they tend to go broke five years after their careers have ended (Ed  Flynn). Why is this happening? Athletes are under the impression that their wealth will  last them forever, and they fail to realize how quickly their spending habits can get out of  control. They are typically uneducated in terms of financial accounting, and often hire  untrustworthy people to manage their finances. These are all compounding factors in  regards to the poor money managing skills we find so prevalent within the professional  athletic community today.  It seems like many professional athletes come from a childhood filled with  poverty. LeBron James, Michael Oher, and Clint Dempsey are all athletes that have  grown up in somewhat extreme poverty (Peter Keating). Michael Oher was homeless  throughout his childhood, and was lucky enough to be taken in by a wealthy family.  Fortunately for them, these particular athletes have had very successful careers, but this is unfortunately not the case for the majority of the professional athletic community.  Athletics have the tendency of becoming the driving force behind these young athletes

lives. They devote their entire being to the sport, and they abandon all other avenues in  life. In many cases, the majority of their time as children is spent playing and practicing  their one particular sport. Their parents are often the ones applying the much pressure on  the athletes to better their financial future. Athletes feel as though they are required to use their athletic skills to provide for their family. Once athletes finally make it, they tend to  find themselves supporting far more people than just themselves. They completely  dedicate themselves to their sport, and fail to make plans for what they could do after  their careers have ended. Athletes will not remain young forever, and everyone’s career  must eventually come to an end.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
