Chantel Wynter Assignment #2 – Defining Identity ENG 201 – Barbra Cole The American way of life, it’s the dream that every person who comes here wants to live out. If you are not born here in America then you have to try your best to fit in to this American way of life, but what is the result? In Gary Soto’s Looking for Work and Roshni Rustomji’s “Thanksgiving in a Monsoonless Land” we see how both the narrators struggle with the idea of what it takes to be an American. Looking at these stories it proves that a person who is not that “ideal American” will struggle with their identity in reference to who they are compared to whom they should be in society. In Soto’s Looking for Work the narrator states “I had a nine year olds vision of wealth that would save us from ourselves. For weeks I had drunk Kool Aid and watched morning reruns of Father Knows Best whose family was so uncomplicated in its routine that I very much wanted to imitate…”
