Chantel Wynter Assignment #2 – Defining Identity ENG 201 – Barbra Cole The American way of life, it’s the dream that every person who comes here wants to live out. If a person is not born in America then they have to try their best to fit in to this American way of life, but what is the result? In Gary Soto’s Looking for Work and Roshni Rustomji’s “Thanksgiving in a Monsoonless Land” both the narrators struggle with the idea of what it takes to be an American. Looking at these stories it proves how difficult it can be for someone who is not that “ideal American” to find their identity when they first come here compared to what they become due to society’s point of view. In Soto’s Looking for Work the narrator states “I had a nine year olds vision of wealth that would save us from ourselves. For weeks I had drunk Kool Aid and watched morning reruns of Father Knows Best whose family was so uncomplicated in its routine that I very much wanted to imitate…” (Soto 32), referring to the fact that he wanted to be like the American white family on TV.
