9Chantel Wynter Writing 101 – Mike Stanish Assignment #5: Art Art can be defined on many different accounts and seen and seen through a variety of aspects as to what art really is. There have been so many different views as to what can truly be considered art from what is not art at all. Everyone depicts art in their own way taking from the views of Plato, Socrates, Aristotle and Oscar Wilde. All these authors viewed art in their own aspect and neither ended up the same view. Really trying to figure what art is, is a difficult task at hand due to the fact that not everyone comes up with the same interpretations depending on what the art form is. Even I don’t agree with the views of these artists because I have my own interpretation of a certain piece of art. Even some things these authors may see as artistic are pretty much pointless to me and have no meaning because of the fact that I have a different view of art as well. According to Socrates who was an idealist believed that according to the introduction “The artist imitates the world of appearances and propagates untruth. Each work of art, whether in colors or materials or words, is merely a copy of a copy, as in a painting of a table…Art therefore a power for evil…” (558) He uses an example “It is the idea of the table that God has created, and it is the idea “table” that is consequently real. God is the maker of this ideal reality; each actual table, in contrast, is no more than one imperfect object into the world of appearances, by definition a false and “untrue” realm.” (Socrates 558) He believes that art is nothing more than the “unreal” and” untrue” and just an imitation of what actually is. Socrates pupil Plato actually believed in the same view towards art. He believes as the excerpt describing him states “Since for Plato truth is absolute and ideal, the very rootedness of art in this world diminishes its
