First Draft with Corrections Chantel Wynter Writing – Michael Stanish Assignment #3 – Race Often times wWhen an person or author writes they do so in order an effort to get outtry and convey a message whether be it for a particular audience or to everybody in general but in their own unique way. Another method frequently used to communicate ideas is creating and formatting a work in a way that – in the author’s point of view – best pleases the target audience; an approach especially used when multiple authors are attempting to convey the same idea. Also when writers want to get out what they want to say they may do so in a way they see fit to please their audience even when two authors are conveying the same message. A writer’s thoughts, ideas, style and diction can convey their point efficiently only depending on who they are trying to appeal to. Take fore example, the writings of Malcolm X ( Learning to Read) and Martin Luther king Jr. (Letter From Birmingham Jail (1963)) which both may have been trying to accomplish the same goal during their time but the difference in how they went about doing that and who they wanted to appeal to the most however showed how one was more productive than the other although I consider both to have contributed greatly. In Martin Luther King Jr. writing Letter from Birmingham Jail (1963) we see that he’s writing to a group of clergymen in his church from a jail cell. He’s addressing the questions that were raised by the clergymen who were doubtful about the way he’s going about putting an end to segregation whereas they felt that their activities to end segregation were “unwise and untimely” (Clergymen 512). Although this is a letter indeed addressed to the clergymen when looked at deeper we can see that he’s also in a way addressing a broader audience. To his own

people, he’s explaining to them exactly why he’s doing what he’s doing and, why he doesn’t feel any contempt as to him being in jail. He uses a passive but strong tone to address the complaint that was set before him. He addresses the concerns in a way that you can’t really counteract on what he’s saying since he already counteracts his own points, in a way already giving answers to questions that would be sure to follow up any idea that he sets forth. When he states, “This reveals that we did not move irresponsibly into direct action…After this we felt that direct action could be delayed no longer…You may well ask, “Why direct action? Why sit-ins, marches, etc?
