Magic Realism “Magic realism” is a style of writing or way of narration, where magical ideas are put into realistic ideas and happening. This is done for an interesting style that will show a more in depth understanding of reality. The first story is “Phantom Palace” by, Isabel Allende, a famous female writer known for her style of “magic realism.” The story is about Spanish conquistadors coming to a land already inhibited by Indians. Right from the beginning of the story we see great examples of “magic realism.” We see this when the Spanish men say they have “discovered” a new land. This is not true as the Indians have been living there for years. They also show superiority when they name the land “San Jeronimo” a name that the natives cannot pronounce. The natives avoid confrontation with the strangers and hide away from them for years as if they were the strangers.
