Growing and Comparing Bacteria
Instructions
Step 1: Making the ‘Petri Dishes’
This whole lab is based on growing bacteria and you’re going to need
containers to do so. This can be done by using one of the following:
 Petri dishes you buy
 Plastic containers that can seal that your parents are okay with
you using
Once you’ve chosen the container for your bacteria, you are going to
need to purchase agar which will be used to grow the bacteria –
watch the video on the course page to help you out with this process.
Step 2: Finding Bacteria
This is a fun part. You get to choose where you’re going to go out and
study bacteria growth. Maybe you want to look on your tooth brush,
or your cell phone, or your family car’s steering wheel. It is very
important that you dip your Q-tip in water before doing your
sample – and then using the moistened Q-tip to spread the
bacteria on your petri dishes. You’ll need to compare 3-5 different
