Land/Sea Absorption  (Albedo) Land: 0.1-0.2 typical Water (midday): <0.05 Depth of penetration Soil, sand, rock: < 0.001 meter (1 millimeter) Water: 5-100 meters Heat more concentrated on land, more dispersed in water Heat capacity  (specific heat) Water has 5 times heat capacity of earth, sand, rock. Same amount of heat causes greater temperature change  in land than in water. Convection/Conduction Water conducts heat twice as well as dry soil Heat remains concentrated in land, spreads out in water Latent heat  (evaporation) Heat divides between sensible (causes temp. change)  and latent (no temp. change) More latent heat from water = less temp change Bottom Line:
