HISTORY 211 War and Peace, à la Tartare 3/26/08 Terms Steppes o Low grassland extending from Sea of Japan to Eastern Europe o Only way to make living in steppes is by herding animals (agriculture doesn’t work) o People trade stuff with sedentary civilization Puszta Pastoralism o Only way for steppe people to survive, by raising and herding animals Ibn Khaldun (+1406) o Lived in Magreb o Had most insightful view of how history developed in middle ages The Muqqadima o Ibn Khaldun’s book; has introduction of how it works, why it happens o Greater material wealth in agricultural world, which leads to luxury and softness o Nomadic people don’t have luxury, thus are tough as nails and see opportunity to raid sedentary society and become ruling class o This new class becomes weak, cycle returns Genghis Khan (+1227) o Chinese tried to keep steppe nomads divided into clans to prevent unity “Raw” and “cooked”—cooked ones are cool, raw ones are crazy o Genghis Khan was victim of Chinese diplomacy; his dad was murdered by
