More to it than just the cover: Gettysburg Scott Williams Mark W. Summers HIS 108 Section 19 December 13, 2013 They sometimes say that it’s not always about winning the battle, but about winning the war. However, this statement isn’t always true. This can be seen from the Battle of Gettysburg
Williams 2 (July 1-3, 1863). This battle during the Civil War was a devastating one. Many lives were lost in Pennsylvania during these three days. Winning this battle would be a major turning point for both the Confederate and Union armies. The main highlight from this war can usually be found in the casualties that occurred; however, the lives of the people, and why they were there in the first place, are key things that need to be evaluated. Obviously all these people were fighting for something. Whether it be for freedom, slavery, or pride, each individual has their own story. The bookThe Killer Angels,by Michael Shaara, goes through the mindsets and lives of several people, both confederate and union soldiers/leaders. Colonel Joshua L. Chamberlain was one of the people whose life during the war was detailed. He was a union leader, particularly of the 20th Maine regiment.1Colonel Chamberlain’s values and morals are key things that strengthened his desire to fight in the war.
