RESPONSE PAPER 4 Iconoclasm As I read the iconoclastic decrees, I began to realize that this was truly the beginning of the division between the eastern and western churches. I can’t help but find that ironic, as the original cause of such an historic division is something like the use of icons. The reason the argument came about in the first place, after all, was that Leo III thought that the cause of military strife within the Byzantine Empire was due to divine retribution at the creation of manmade icons of God. Yet however ridiculous the cause, the effects cannot be ignored. Iconoclasm created a massive rift between eastern and western Christianity, and it’s clear from reading the iconoclastic decrees that both sides were holding a religious battle for the details of their beliefs. The Iconoclastic Council’s writing begins by demonizing the creation of icons, certainly, and it uses textual support from the Bible to do so.
