HISTORY 211 Europe, the Sick Man 4/3/08 Terms House of Commons o Commoners begin to get political power in 14 th and 15 th century because they become useful in military power o In 1341 House of Commons represent commoners and are allowed to meet with general parliament (House of Lords) Scutage o “Scutum” means shield; scutage essentially shield money o Tax instituted by kings to buy infantrymen o By 14 th century, nobody believes in ordo Black Death (1347-52) o Single most destabilizing and important catastrophic event o Every 8 to 14 years after, the disease came back o Minimalist view is 30% of Europe dead; maximalist 50% o Doesn’t really matter what disease it was o Led to class war that didn’t exist in trifunctional society Virgin Population o Population not previously exposed to a particular pathogen o Many historians claim that Europe was virgin to bubonic plague o Squatriti: ridiculous because impossible to develop immunity to bubonic plague Plague o
