HISTORY 211 The Medieval Renaissance 1/24/07 Terms Hildegard of Bingen (+1179) o Her mysticism was effort to reassert the importance of Benedictine worship o Founded monastery at Bingen where she got fame and power from her mysticism Claustration o Forbidding cloistered nuns from ever leaving the nunnery Scivias (1150) o “Know the Ways” o Hildegard of Bingen’s book wherein she describes and explains her direct and unmediated encounters with God Mysticism o Mysticism is attempt of individual to be filled with divinity without taking communion, going to confession, etc. Beguines o Almost never aristocrats, usually ordinary urban widows o Don’t take vows, own property; informal community supporting themselves through labor (esp. weaving) Romanesque o 12 th century o Rounded arches, rounded vaults o Decorations appear to be organic growths out of architecture Groin Vault o Barrel vault cut at 45-degree angle o Designed for acoustics Basilica o Developed in Roman Empire, standard throughout middle ages
