Experiment Goal: The goal of this lab is to (i) understand common laboratory acids and bases and how to work safely with them, (ii) investigate the use of a variety of color indicators as probes for acids and bases, (iii) carry out a series of acid-base titrations and determine stoichiometry of such reactions, (iv) accurately determine the concentration of a solution of NaOH, (v) initiate a reaction between powdered eggshells and excess hydrochloric acid, (vi) design and execute an experiment to test the hypothesis that pucker- promoting potential of fruits and fruit juices is directly proportional to concentration of acids present in the fruit, and (vii) titrate excess acid left over from eggshell reaction with NaOH and determine percentage of calcium carbonate in eggshells. Section A: Common Laboratory Acids and Bases This is a conceptual section. Read through the associated section in the Chemtrek. In your own words, describe some of what we know about common acids and bases: The goal of this part of experiment 8 is to understand common laboratory acids and bases and how to work safely with them. The first thing given in this part of the experiment is a table of common laboratory acids and bases with information such as chemical formula, formula weight, color, density, percent weight, and molarity of each. For example, sodium hydroxide is listed with a formula of NaOH (s), a formula weight of 40.00g, white pellets as a color, a density of 2.130, and no information is given on percent weight or molarity. After giving basic information on the acids/bases used in Chem 111, the lab shows a typical label from a bottle of acid which showcases the size, contents, danger labels, and first aid help. Acids and bases should always be diluted with water before being used in reactions. For this reason, accurately known concentration solutions cannot be made by the usual procedure of weighing the substance, dissolving it in solvent, and then diluting to a known volume. First, a solution of a very approximate concentration is made, then further accurate dilution, along with standardization, is required.
