Ulanoff, Ph.D.,OFFICE:University Hall 425TELEPHONE:750-4282E-MAIL:[email protected]FAX:310-390-5512OFFICE HOURS:Wednesdays, 4:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. and byappointmentCLASS MEETING TIME/PLACE:Tuesdays, 4:00–6:45p.m., offcampusCOURSE DESCRIPTION:This course is designed to introduceeducational practitioners to the fields of educational research andevaluation.As such, it explores quantitative and qualitativemethods of designing and conducting research and evaluation in thecontext of classroom settings.It further examines measurement,assessment, common statistical techniques and methods forcritiquing research and program evaluation studies.COURSE OBJECTIVES:This course enables students to becomegood consumers of research and evaluation by providing afoundation of knowledge in the area of research methods that willenable them to read research and program evaluation reports withenough understanding to determine a study’s merits.Thereforestudents will:Develop a working understanding of research methods anddesigns for educational settings;Learn formal and informal approaches to classroom assessmentthat can be applied to improve pedagogy and enhanceaccountability;Enhance their practical understanding of both quantitative andqualitative research methods (descriptive statistics, ethnography,case studies, etc.);Be able to analyze the strengths and limitations of educationalresearch studies;Be able to refer to appropriate sources to find the answers toresearch and evaluation problems and produce a comprehensivereview of the literature; andDesign and conduct an original research project.MISSION STATEMENT:The mission of the College of EducationCommunity is to collaboratively transform public education bypreparing thoughtful educators and advancing professionalpractices. At a minimum, students must attend more than80% of class time, or s/hemay not receive a passing grade for thecourse at the discretion of the instructor. Individual instructors mayadopt more stringent attendance requirements. Should the studenthave extenuating circumstances, s/he should contact the instructoras soon as possible.
