Name: Noor Mustafa Psychology of Aging Instructor: Thomas Chan Fall 2014 Homework#4 – Why Do Our Bodies and Minds Grow Old? Do Intelligence and Creativity Decline with Age? 1. A common myth is that people “die of old age.” From the textbook, select and discuss one or two biological theories of aging (p. 59-63) that you believe “best” describes why people die in old age/why humans do not live forever. Also discuss why you selected these theories (why they make most sense to you). The wear-and-tear theory is a thoery that sees aging as a result of chance. The human body is constantly replacing and repairing cells. Parts of the body wear out from repeated use. I chose this theory because it makes sense for certain joints and even organs not working as they should and creating a chain effect that leads to the crash of the entire body. Autoimmune theory of aging suggests the immune system may eventually become defective and no longer distinguish the body's own tissues from forgeign tissues. The body may then begin to attack itself, as suggested by the risingincidence of autoimmune diseases that come with advanced age. Since there an abundance of diseases that cause the immune system to attack itself , I feel that this theory is an accurate suggestion for why people die of old age.
