TUESDAY, JULY 27THTHE LONG FREEDOM MOVEMENTSOPHIA IMAMBeginning in 1955-56 with the Montgomery bus boycott, a series of black protests evolved intoone of the most major social movements of the twentieth century in the South during the nextdecade. As a result, the black movement developed its own local structures and leadership, pursuing economic and political changes in addition to those sought by the main civil rightsorganizations of the time. Participants referred to their actions as liberation wars to emphasizethe movement's broad range of aims. The southern black liberation movement may best be viewed as a tactical and, in the end, anintellectual divergence from those long-term civil rights activities, according to the NAACP andother national reform groups. Unorthodox and more forceful techniques, local protest action, decentralized control, and a rising sense of racial consciousness among members were allhallmarks of the movement.
