Anthropology 311 Book Notes: Earth’s blanket chapter 1 The “valuables of the earth” and “earth’s blanket” are powerful metaphors. They sign an attitude towards earth and the plants growing upon it that would have guided the Nlaka’pmx people’s behavior that would have reminded them of the importance of vegetation and constrained any harmful actions against it. This is a direct and reciprocal relationship between these people and their environment in which the consequence of wrongful action are seen to be immediate and direct. Gaia Theory: Earth is a self regulating organism that adjust to changes in order to maintain suitable conditions for life. Although the theory contends that life on Earth will continue no matter what humans do to it, the theory suggested that life forms, including humans, may not survive the adjustments the planet is forced to make to accommodate the imposed change. Both theories don’t mention that people should use plants for survival.
