Professor Abdullah Otherness Essay September 21, 2007 ENG 101 - CRN 20322 Grade Level: 9.2 A Feeling of “Otherness” One of the themes that jumped out at me while reading James Baldwin’s “A Stranger in the Village,” was “otherness”. This feeling really hit me hard when I started my first job, a game/ride operator at a boardwalk amusement park in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. The reason why I felt alone was that this job hired many foreign students to work for them and I was working with people of different cultures. Working with them has taught me a lot about cultural diversity and has helped vanquish that feeling of “otherness”. Funland is a boardwalk amusement park located in Rehoboth Beach. It has been around since the 1920’s. Starting out with only three rides and one game, Funland has evolved into a theme park with 20 rides, multiple games for different age groups, and a family friendly environment.
