Michael Chenette February 10, 2008 Fundamentals of Communication Good Speech The speech that I chose to do for this paper is the “Mad as Hell” speech from the movie “Network”. This speech is a critical speech that deals with the power of the media, the power of the people, and the control we have over this country. In 1975, terrorist violence is the topic of network nightly news programming. As a result, the corporate structure of the UBS television network is changing. Because they are losing ratings, they turn its News division over to the entertainment division. As one of the ramifications of this move, the head news Anchor, Howard Beale, is fired. He reacts to this by sensationally announcing on live television his intention to commit suicide on air. In doing so, Beale becomes a major TV icon and one of the most valuable assets to the network. His ravings make him an icon for the network as the need to sell begins to overwhelm everyone touched by the network. As a result, he is given his own
