We learned about the importance of the conversion of testosterone to estradiol by aromatase for stopping the adolescent growth spurt. Testosterone (T) can also be converted to another, more potent, androgen, dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase.

Ratio of T to DHT metabolites in the urine of normal adult males, males carrying the 5-alpha- reductase deficient trait, and adult guevedoces. A high ratio means that not much T conversion to DHT is taking place. Imperato-McGinley J et al. 1974. Science 186:1213-1215

Ratio of radioactive DHT to T metabolites after administration of radio- labeled T. An experimental confirmation of the inference drawn from the data on the previous slide. Imperato-McGinley J et al. 1974. Science 186:1213-1215

Conversion of T to DHT occurs in the skin at certain sites. DHT binds to androgen receptor with much higher affinity than T and so amplifies the strength of androgen signaling where it is produced. One of its effects is to shrink hair follicles in the scalp, causing apparent hair loss. Products for preventing hair loss, like Propecia ™, block the conversion of T to DHT.

The in utero development of the male external genitalia also depends on the in situ conversion of T to DHT.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
