Michael Chenette Introduction to Film December 8, 2007 Martin Scorsese The director Martin Scorsese is one of the most acclaimed directors of our time. This paper will look at three films: “Goodfellas”, “Gangs of New York“, and “The Departed.” This paper will discuss three common occurrences in these movies: an introduction as to how the main character, through his childhood, got involved in the mob or mafia, how each film is based on or inspired by true stories, characters or events, and Scorsese’s unrivaled style of capturing the violence endemic in American society. In these movies, each story begins with the protagonist encountering the life of a gang, starting out as a child and working their way up. In the movie “Goodfellas”, Henry Hill, played by Ray Liotta, was a kid growing up in New York who in 1955, quit school and went to work for the mob. In “Gangs of New York”, Amsterdam, played by Leonardo DeCaprio, was the small boy who watched his father get slain by “Bill the Butcher”. Finally, in “The Departed”, Colin, played by Matt Damon, was the small boy who worked at the gas station with Frank Costello. In each

Paul Vario was a member of the U.S. Italian Mafia and a Capo regime in the Lucchese Family. He lived his entire life in New York City and was jumped from job to job. Also in the movie, Cicero's close associate, Jimmy Conway, played by Robert De Niro, was
