Chapter 5 notes Strategies - Learning strategies - Scaffolding techniques - Higher order questioning tasks Learning strategies Cognitive learning strategies – cognitive strategies are directly related to individual learning tasks and are used by learners when they are mentally and/or physically manipulate material, or when they apply a specific technique to a learning task. Examples: taking notes, using mnemonic, previewing a story etc. Metacognitive learning strategies – the use of metacognitive strategies implies awareness, reflection, and interaction. Examples: predicting and inferring, generating questions and using the questions to guide comprehension, summarizing and synthesizing, etc. Language learning strategies: - increase their progress in speaking and comprehending new language. Examples: paraphrasing, drawing pictures, breaking words into component parts, previewing, skimming, etc. Scaffolding techniques Scaffolding – is associated with the theory of the zone of proximal development.
