History 101 Western Civilization Professor Hopkins September 30, 2014 History as a whole is a broad spectrum of accounts of events during a specific time period. Until recently we didn’t know in detail what the personal lives of people from the past were like and how they acted. A couple examples of some of the aspects that have been surfaced are marriage, divorce and the court systems. The Return of Martin Guerre and Giovanni and Lusanna both gave us some insight on what all of these aspects were like during the Renaissance era. The Return of Martin Guerre is a true story about a marriage between two members of the peasant class in France. Their marriage was put to trial because of an imposter posing to be Martin Guerre after he left to join the army. Giovanni and Lusanna is another true story about two lovers from Florence who were both from different social classes. Giovanni was from a rich merchant background while Lusanna’s late husband worked with textiles. Giovanni is eventually taken to court by Lusanna after he marries an upper-class woman claiming that Giovanni was already married to her. These two windows into the past seem somewhat similar at first glance. After examining both of them further, it is clear that there are distinct differences in each of the major aspects listed. To better understand the similarities and differences between these accounts, an analysis of the following facets of their tales must be performed; the social conditions, the marriage ceremony and the court cases. During the Renaissance peoples actions were formed by the precedent already set in place. The church seemed to have played a huge role in both of these tales, but is much more prominent in Giovanni and Lusanna. In their account, their trials were held by heads of the church, the second trial being held by Pope Calixtus II himself. In Martin Guerre, their trials
