2MEXICO DEMOCRATIC TRANSITIONFor several years Mexico has been going through a process of many reforms. From aglobal perspective, there has been reforms of privatization, reduction of size, decentralization,governmental modernization, and finally a process of democratization. These reforms have beenchanging the country socially, economically and politically.Both external and internal factors led Mexico into a progressive and incremental changetowards democracy, that began to take shape in the late 1900s.According to Mexico’s history, itsdemocratization happened gradually throughout many years. External factors such as economicglobalization, the downfall of the Soviet bloc, and transitions from dictatorial to democraticregimes in Europe and Latin America, contributed to promoting the beginning of democraticprocesses in Mexico. Internal factors also played major roles in the transition, for instance, thecountry’s critical economic situation. After years of economic challenges and struggles, in 1982Mexico’s economy reached the height of its crisis, the country’s foreign debt had hit $86 billionand Mexico was unable to meet this debt obligation.At this time, the priority became to restructure and stabilize the economy which resultedin significant social, economic and political transformations.
