An international military alliance, based on the North Atlantic Treaty, based in Brussels, Belgium to safeguard the freedom and security, through political and military means, of its members. NATO Has 28 member states from across Europe and North America. Warsaw Pact 14thMay 1955. A treaty signed, in Warsaw, by the Soviet Union and seven European ‘satellites’ for a mutual defence organisation enabling the Soviet Union to be in command of the armed forces of its members.
