Sociology 1 Lecture #18 11/03/2008 14:32:00 Notes on the exam Will be a question from every reading and every video—Pink Scantron—only  from weeks 6-10 Government: Authority and Power Power: ability to exercise one’s will over others o Sources of power in political system include Force: Actual pr threatened use of coercion to impose one’s  political dissidents Influence: exercise power through a process of persuasions Authority: institutionalized power recognized by the people over whom it is  exercised o Max Weber developed classification for authority Traditional: Legitimate power conferred by custom and accepted  practice Legal-rational: Power is made by legitimate law (elected officials  have authority) Charismatic:  Power is made legitimate by leader’s exceptional  personal or emotional appeal to his or her followers (dictators) Who runs the United States o Elite Model: Marx argued that industrial societies were dominated by
