Sociology 1 Lecture #4 17/01/2008 15:30:00 Socialization--The process by which we learn out culture Nature Versus Nurture o What is the more important aspect, biology or society Many, especially earlier scholars, focused on childhood  development—assumes at a certain point we are done  developing Others advocate a life long approach to socialization o Sociology of the self Self—the distinct identity of an individual that sets hem apart  from others Interactionist approach is the most important in helping  us understand the development the “self” Cooley’s theory Looking-glass self (a mirror) 3 phases of developing our identity Looking at yourself in the mirror Imaging what other people think of you Imagining who you are based on what other  people think Based largely on imagination i.e.  Student turns in a paper, gets a bad grade.  Student
