Christain McDermott Amy Vordhal Rosemary Vohs MWF 3:00 2/10/08 2/11/08 WHY SPORTS ARE NECESSARY Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience to become involved in some sort of sport, be it intramural or recreational, because of the proven mental and physical benefits. Central Idea: Playing any sport is good for a person in many ways. It inspires leadership and self-confidence, extends life spans and increases mental toughness in any individual involved. Introduction I. (Attention Getter) Currently in the United States more than two thirds of people are considered to be overweight. That equates to roughly two hundred million people. II. (Audience Adaptation) This ridiculous number will continue to grow unless we all find it within ourselves to change our lifestyles and make the decision to have a more active existence. III. (Purpose) Today, I am going to explain to you the benefits of being active and involved in sports, in doing so I hope you will decide to go out and participate. IV. (Preview) I am going to discuss three different aspects of sports. A. First, I will talk about the positive effects that playing sports has on children. B. Next, I will talk about the positive effects playing a sport has on adults. C. Finally, I will discuss different ways of getting out and getting active. Transition: I will start off by looking at the positive effects playing a sport has on children. Body I. It is imperative that children are involved in sports or are at the very least physically active. Any child not involved in physical activity risks being less healthy physically and mentally than a child that does play sports, or who is physically active. A. First I will discuss how sports can affect a child's physical health. 1. Obesity has become a very serious problem in our country among everyone, including children. a.)
