4/4/08 – Murder in Amsterdam, Buruma Presentations Pim Fortuyn- Agenda Against bureaucracy Against “left wing” Said that left wing politicians (namely Social Democrats) looked only after their own interests and did not represent the wants and needs of the Dutch people o Against immigration (especially Muslim) Denounced Islam for being a danger to Dutch liberties” (pg. 47) o Thought of Europe as a “place without a soul” o National community should be like a family Shared language, culture, etc. Foreigners disturbed this family dynamic o Openly gay ----- Popularity His first supporters were rich men who had “new money” -not members of the Dutch aristocracy, but men who had made money recently o Although they were rich, these men had no real political power o Saw Fortuyn as their ticket to political and social influence o Driven partly by self-interest (lower taxes, etc) but also thought Fortuyn was a man who would be able to clean up the government
