Importance of definition, especially in social science and comparative politics, because it can have a huge impact on the way a state is governed Definition of war versus conflict (Congress hasn’t declared war on Iraq) Globalization and democratization are the two aspects that have spurred the interconnectedness of governments Democratization is an ongoing, never ending process fostering civil rights, participation in government, etc Before WWI there were four prevalent systems of government: absolute monarchy, democracy, communism, fascism Between the world wars monarchy wasn’t an expansionist-type government, meaning they weren’t trying to spread themselves across the world, while the others were Fascism was no longer a threat on the world stage after WWII After WWII there was a bipolar world, with two prevalent forms of government: communism and democracy US and USSR fought proxy wars over the rest of the world, which was seen as up for grabs for either democracy or communism
