Greek War of Independence from the Ottoman Empire between 1821 and 1830 Bavarian King Otto was chosen to lead the country between 1833 and 1863, but it became a constitutional monarchy after the Constitutional Revolt in 1943 After King Otto’s death a new king had to be chosen, and the Danish House of Oldenburg was chosen and ruled between 1863 and 1924 Between 1967 and 1974 the country was under a military dictatorship Currently Greek, officially called the Hellenic Republic, is a parliamentary- presidential system Monarch was officially abolished in 1974, former king currently lives in London First constitution written during the War for Independence was influenced by the French Constitution Multiple constitutions and revisions have existed since then, with the current one having been written in 1974 that has 120 articles More strongly a parliamentary system, with the President as the head of state Dr. Karolos Papoulias is the current president and has been since 2005 Prime Minister is the head of government, elected in national parliamentary elections, leader of majority power, forms the 17-member cabinet, and is in power for 4 years Members of the executive are usually also members of the legislature and the executive is accountable to the legislature, such as being dissolved after a vote of no confidence or lack of faith towards the government Between 1974 and 1981 there was a period of democratization under the
