Russia has the largest oil reserves in the world, is extremely technologically- savvy, greatly endowed with natural resources (timber, minerals, etc) First Tsar was Ivan the Terrible (1462-1505), who called himself that after Caesar Bolsheviks were able to take control because they were the most well organized; they had a firm ideology, strict hierarchy, and included paramilitary group Stalin killed between 1 and 100 million of his own people while he was in power Ukraine has the similar agricultural blessings of the American Midwest 1 in 3 people were harassed, killed, imprisoned, etc by KGB during the Great Purge Nikita Khrushchev was seen as being weak in backing down during the Cuban Missile Crisis, leading to his being somewhat peacefully forced from power, only Soviet leader that didn’t die or was violently expelled from top government/party spot Dissidents or anyone disliked by the Party were institutionalized and declared insane under Brezhnev rather than being killed or put in gulags
