Earlier this semester there was a class discussion on Title IX and the obvious inequities between male and female sports. I remembered that there were a lot of ideas during that class, but there was no real consensus on why men’s sports receive so much more attention than women’s. So for my project I set out to find the reasons the average student at Rutgers would go to a men’s sport over women’s, at the same time I tried to find out what the economic reasons for Rutgers to prefer men’s sports were, if any. To Begin my project I typed out about fifty survey cards asking the opinions of students or faculty, or pretty much anyone that would fill out a card. After completing the survey I noticed that all the reasons people gave for the popularity of men’s sports over women’s could be grouped into three different categories; Men’s sport are more aggressive, our sexist society prefers men’s sports over women’s, and men’s sports have more advertising and promoting than women’s. After finding out the student’s opinion I decided to form an opinion of my own.
