The groups that Mclean is talking about are all small groups. In the small groups they
have there own sort of communication. Small group communication means the interaction
among three to nine people working together to achieve an interdependent goal (Pearson et al
223). Looking in the book these groups would be put as a secondary group. A secondary group
also may be known as a task-oriented group. The task-oriented group is formed for the purpose
of completing tasks, such as solving problems or making decisions (Pearson et al 224). These
groups also have the function of emergent groups. Emergent groups are the results of
environmental conditions leading to the formation of a cohesive group of individuals (Pearson et
al 224).
Our book states leadership as a process of using communication to influence the
behaviors and attitudes of others to meet group goals (Pearson et al 225). The leader of these
groups would be a designated leader. Designated leader means someone who has been appointed
