September 26th, 2013 Social Commentary on the Fourteenth Century England was operating under the Feudal system dealing with slavery in a way Black Plague takes out 1/3 of the population and most of these people are the workers o not enough people to work the fields o war going on (Hundred Years War) o England owns half of France o change in demographics in times of disaster mobile people who move into towns o huge rise in urban population o people begin to band together (religious reasons) o rise of the middle class Chaucer aware of his social class (middle) criticized society, the middle class and the church taken on as a page, and fights very young in the Hundred Years War prisoner of war, has to be ransomed involved in parliament, elected member and diplomat o goes to the convent in Italy, on English business o renaissance in Italy extremely smart notices the innovation of the frame narrative o tells two levels in a story o Chaucer takes this idea because it's entertaining
