The Chebyshev rule (see reference 2) states that for any data set, regardless of shape, the percentage of values that are found within distances of k standard deviations from the mean must be at least 1 (I — 7) X 100%: k You can use this rule for any value of k greater than 1, For example, consider k = 2. The Chebyshev rule states that at least [ 1 — (1/2) 2] X 100% = 75% of the values must be found within i2 standard deviations of the mean. The Chebyshev rule is very general and applies to any distribution. The rule indicates at least what percentage of the values fall within a given distance from the mean, However, if the data set is approximately bellmshaped, the empirical rule will more accurately reflect the greater concentration of data close to the mean. Table 3,7 compares the Chebyshev and em— pirical rules. ### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
