Jeanne St. Romain Theatre 1020 November 15, 2007 Chapter 13—The Renaissance 1. When I think of the Renaissance, I picture knights, medieval times, and Shakespearian plays. 2. Define these terms from the Italian Influence: a. Commedia dell’arte originated in 16 th century Italy. It was traveling acting companies that presented broad, improvisational comedy. They were extremely popular in Europe between 1550 and 1750. We get the term slapstick from this form of theatre. b. The three unities were rigid rules for playwriting. They were 1) the action must take place within a 24-hour period, 2) settings can all be reached within 24 hours, and 3) no commingling of comedy and tragedy. c. Declamatory acting is an oratorical, elocutionary method in which actors delivered their lines directly to the audience in a rhetorical manner typified by order, harmony, and decorum. d. Perspective scenery is a technique of set design and scene painting that gives the illusion of depth. It gave birth to the proscenium arch theatre.
