Jeremy Seidl Document Paper #2 Document 101 . Franklin D. Roosevelt on Economic Freedom 1936 Document 101 is Franklin D . Roosevelt’s acceptance speech for his renomination of presidency for the Democratic Party . The speech was given in Philadelphia in 1936 and focused on the importance of American economic freedom . He says America fought for its freedom from “the tyranny of political autocracy” in the American Revolution so the average man could govern himself . He says “the rush of modern civilization itself has raised for us new difficulties, new problems which must be solved .” The modern civilization that he is referring to are the inventions of machinery , the rail road systems, the telegraph and the radio, electricity , and the ability to mass produce products. He compares the owners of these new inventions to the “the tyranny of political autocracy” of England calling them “economic royalist”.
