Sociology 1100 Notes Chapter 8 Race – socially constructed category of people who share biologically transmitted traits  that members of society see as important  Not scientific  There is no pure race  US perceives fewer racial categories than Brazil (recognizes 40 races) Ethnicity – cultural heritage or shared ancestry  Irish or Italian  Race and ethnicity can give a sense of identity  Assimilation – minorities who gradually adopt patterns of dominant culture  They gradually lose their own traditions  Considered a melting pot Pluralism – To preserve, respect, and embrace diversity Different groups are living and working together creating a greater society Live together, yet remain separate and distinct. Have a social parody (equal)  Considered a salad bowl (China Town) Minority Group – category of people distinguished by physical or cultural traits and  socially disadvantaged.
