SOCI 1100 Sociology Chapter 4 Notes Status – A social position a person has  Part of our identity  Before we deal with anyone, we need to know who they are Status set – all the statuses that a person holds Will change throughout life Ascribed Status – social position received at birth Little or no choice in this Cannot be changed, but we can change people’s perception of the particular  status Age, color, gender Achieved Status – A status achieved through talent, ability, or effort Master Status – When an ascribed or achieved status is so important, it over shadows  all other statuses  Often shapes a person’s entire life Can be positive or negative Class, race, gender, sexual orientation, disability Roles – Behavior people expect of someone who holds a particular status
