Chapter 7 – Stratification (184) What is the American Dream? Is it still attainable today?  Stratification – you rank people in a hierarchy Some people will get more opportunities than others Principles 1. Stratification is a trait of society. Ex. Wealthy children have access to better  health care and education.  2. It usually carries from generation to generation. Wherever your parents are in  society, you have the same chance of making it where they did. (social mobility) 3. Stratification is found everywhere 4. Involves beliefs or reasons why people are considered unequal (people are  poor because people don’t know how to budget, people are poor because they  don’t want to work).  Caste vs. Class System Caste system – your social status is based on ascription (born with it). There is  little or no social mobility in a caste system. India
