Name: Jonathan BuiLab Time: Wednesday 9:00 AM - 2:00 PMLab Group 1MSE 227 Lab # 8 - Precipitation HardeningAbstractIn this lab, I was looking at how time and temperature would change a material and how the coolingtemperatures and times related to other aspects of the material.Precipitation Hardening or Age Hardeninginvolves three distinct steps:Solution Treatmentto minimize segregation in the alloy, quenchingto createa supersaturated solid solution andAgingto facilitate the formation of coherent precipitates whichstrengthen the alloy by interfering with dislocation movement. The primary species of precipitationstrengthening are second phase particles. These particles impede the movement of dislocations throughoutthe lattice. It can be determined whether second phase particles will precipitate into solution from thesolidus line on the phase diagram for the particles. Physically, this strengthening effect can be attributedboth to size and modulus effects, and to interfacial or surface energy. If the aging time is too long or attoo high of a temperature, some precipitates will grow larger while others will wither and disappear; andthe hardness will be directly and adversely affected. In other words, a decrease in the number ofprecipitates corresponds to a decrease in hardness. Aging or precipitation hardening temperature affect the
