ABSTRACT The purpose of the lab “ Analysis of Hardness of Water” is to determine the hardness of water by titration with standard EDTA and lean about the causes of water. In this experiment water would be tested to determine the hardness of water with EBT indicator and EDTA solution titrating it and the end point was marked with a blue color. The hardness of water was calculated to be 915 ppm CaCO 3 . BACKGROUND/ INTRODUCTION Water containing a relatively high concentration of Ca2+, Mg 2+, and other divalent cations is called hard water. These ions reaction react with soaps to form an insoluble soap scum. When water containing calcium ions and bicarbonate ions is heated, some carbon dioxide is driven off and as a result the solution becomes less acidic and insoluble calcium carbonate forms Calcium carbonate, carbon dioxide and water. 1 Hardness is usually measured by chemical titration.
