o Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen Organic molecules contain these primarily o Some trace elements are very important Calcium, phosphorous, sodium, iron, etc. Redox reactions o In some chemical reactions, electrons can be transferred b/w atoms Oxidation- loss of election Reduction- gain of an e- Chemical bonds o Molecules- atoms in stable association o Compounds- molecules with more than one type of element o Chemical bonds Important to understand bio o Bond is the strongest Ionic bonds o Formed by attraction of opp charged ions o Gain or loss of e- forms ions Na atom loses an e- to become Na+ Cl atom gains an e- to become Cl- Opp charges attract Na+ and Cl- make an ionic compound = table salt
