Name: Jonathan BuiLab Time: Wednesday 9:00 AM - 2:00 PMLab Group 1MSE 227 Lab # 9 - Corrosion TestAbstractUnderstanding how much or how little a material corrodes when exposed to specific chemicals is crucialbefore it is used in any application. Electrochemical corrosion of metals occurs when electrons fromatoms at the surface of the metal are transferred to a suitable electron acceptor or depolarizer. Water mustbe present to serve as a medium for the transport of ions. The most common depolarizers are oxygen, acids, and the cations of less active metals. Coolant corrosion inhibitors help decrease the corrosion rateof metals within given equipment and help maintain other coolant properties. In a galvanic reaction, theelectrical potential (voltage) difference between the anode and cathode causes the corrosion current toflow. The anode is the area that suffers metal loss or corrosion. This is the result of current dischargingfrom the metal surface. The amount of metal that will corrode (rust) is directly proportional to the amountof current flow. Pitting corrosion is a form of localized corrosion, which produces attacks in the form ofspots or pits. Pitting corrosion attacks most often take place at points where the passive layer might beweakened. Problems with pitting corrosion attacks depend primarily on the chloride content, the pH value(the acidity), and the temperature. If pitting has taken place and if the environment in such is not toocorrosive for the steel grade, a spontaneous repair of the passive layer will occur in the presence ofoxygen.Saltwateris more corrosivethan would be expected from its chloridecontent. The reason is thatbiological activity will occur.
