3300 Final Study Guide 17/12/2007 17:01:00 3300 Final Study Guide: Essays Essay 1.  Group Project  Bitzer’s Idea of Rhetorical situation and its parts:  B itzer described the concept of the rhetorical situation in his essay of the same name. The concept relies on understanding a moment called "exigence," in which something happens, or fails to happen, that compels one to speak out. For example, if the local school board fires a popular principal, a sympathetic parent might then be compelled to take the microphone at the meeting and/or write a letter to the editor. Bitzer defined the rhetorical situation as the "complex of persons, events, objects, and relations presenting an actual or potential exigence which can be completely or partially removed if discourse, introduced into the situation, can so constrain human decision or action as to bring about the significant modification of the exigence." o Exigence: What happens or fails to happen? Why is one compelled to speak out? A problem or lack of some kind o Audience- distinguishes audience from rhetorical audience- later being those influenced by discourse and capable of mediating change. Positive Negative Artistic Inartistic o Constraints- attitudes, beliefs, traditions, precedents with the power to limit decision or action needed to modify the situation and remedy the exigence. o During the class presentations it was apparent that there was a central theme revolving around the exigency created by the 2008 election. In November of 2008 the citizens of the United States will head to the voting polls to elect a new leader. By applying Bitzer’s elements of rhetorical situations from Rhetorica one can break down the approach groups took to respond to the exigency. The students of rhetorical foundations responded to the exigency created by our nation’s future in question. We were assigned to either support or condemn the major candidates: both democrat and republican. Groups had to distinguish whether or not the audience was influenced by discourse.
