As you read Nisbett for Wednesday, think about WHY he reports each of the studies he does. He presents several competing explanations for why Southerners are more violent than Northerners. Each of his five studies/sections show support for HIS explanation, while ruling out at least one of the competing explanations. We’ll be talking in class about how the studies support the Culture of Honor explanation, and rule out some of the competing explanations, and why. The focus is on what the Culture of Honor is, and on how the data are used to support the Culture of Honor. For Monday, in addition to preparing Nisbett (see my last email), you’ll be reading an article comparing French and American eating patterns. We may or may not get to both papers, but please be ready, just in case. As you read it, focus on the studies and how they support Rozin et al.’s argument. In class we may be making an “argument map” of the opening paragraphs if this paper. So, pay attention to where their data fit in the grand scheme of the larger theory about the causes of the French Paradox. Finally, can you compare the structure of this argument to Nisbett’s paper? At what level are these papers similar? What are they arguing about culture and how it works? For Monday, you should read Shweder (as I noted, read it in a quiet place for best results!) o Focus on pp. 73-77, 84-90, and 97-110. try to understand what Shweder means by “culture and psyche make each other up,” by coming up with a new example, not a weed example.   1. “meaning” is an important theoretical concept in cultural psychology. Pay some attention to how Shweder uses the term “meaning”   2. how is cultural psychology different from cross-cultural psychology?   3. What does Shweder’s view of intentional person and intentional world predict about cultural change? Will cultures change? If so, how? How fast?   4. In reading the section that starts on p. 103, see if you can think of any cultural habits in your environment (intentional worlds) that are positively or negatively related to intentional persons…see if you can come up with a North American example similar to the “Day of embarrassment” or “death pollution.” For Wednesday you’ll be reading a paper by Whiten (linked on WebCT, you can also get it via electronic journals in the library) and a chapter by Baumeister. The Whiten paper is a concise one—each sentence seems important. However, what is the overall argument? o
