Responsive Environments Myron Kruger • "Man-Machine interaction is usually limited to a seated man poking at a machine with his fingers. .. I was dissatisfied. ." (25) • In part what we are looking at tonight and over the next few week is computer art that escapes the bounds of the screen and keyboard. ..

“Artificial Reality” and “Responsive Environments” • Some points from NMR’s introduction • Myron Krueger coined the above terms to describe his work, and viewed VR (Virtual Reality) as one manifestation of Artificial Reality • They draw the connection between conceptual art and interaction by quoting Roy Ascott: “Meaning is not created by the artist, distributed through the network, and received by the observer. Meaning is the product of interaction between the observer and the system, the content of which is in a state of flux, of endless change and transformation.” • Think again of either interactive art or participatory happenings. .. • Think of semiotics (and the langue) • We can extend this to many things we look at this quarter. .. Oulipo, "Adventure" game by Will Crowther and Don Woods, Ted Nelson, Hypertext, etc.

History of VR technology • Ivan Sutherland invented the head mounted display in 1968 (MIT), and the data glove was invented in 1976 at University of Illinois. • NASA Completes the first modern VR system in 1985 – using Ivan Sutherland’s work. Scott Fisher adds the Data Glove to this NASA system in 1986. 1968 1986 Jaron Lanier was the first to sell the dataglove and VR headsets, 1987.

Myron Krueger • Myron Krueger also played a role in the development of VR – he describes the idea of VR in “Responsive Environments” (Item 4, page 386). He saw VR as part of Artificial Reality. • Early work: GLOWFLOW (1969) • Glowing tube and sound installation controlled by pressure sensitive foot pads • Krueger thought of it as a kinetic sculpture • ("Homage to New York", Jean Tinguely, Billy Kluver, 1960 is one of the most famous "kinetic sculpture" works. ..) • Krueger developed a list of aesthetic criteria from the experience

Myron R. Krueger Responsive Environments (1977) pg 379-380 The GLOWFLOW project led Krueger to these decisions: 1.Interactive art is potentially a richly composable medium quite distinct from the concerns of sculpture, graphic art, or music. 2.In order to respond intelligently the computer should perceive as much as possible about the participants behavior. 3.In order to focus on the relationships between environment and the participants, rather than among participants, only a small number of people should be involved at a time. 4.The participants should be aware of how the environment is responding to them. 5.The choice of sound and visual response systems should be dictated by their ability to convey a wide variety of conceptual relationships.
