Richard Wagner (Randall Packer has done much to recuperate him for new media. .. integration, immersion, narrativity, interactivity, hypertext) The Bauhaus Marinetti and the Italian Futurists Surrealism Situationist international movement – Guy Debord John Cage, Alan Kaprow (UCSD professor emeritus), Roy Ascott , Lynn Hershman, E.A.T (Robert Rauschenberg, Billy Kluver, Robert Whitman, others), Myron Krueger, Kit Galloway and Sherrie Rabinowitz, The Oulipo. Myron Krueger is pretty interesting to go back and look at, because he was working in the same time period as E.A.T, A&T, and the Expo 70. The Oulipo even earlier. (We will look at both of their work in detail this quarter. .. and also read Lynn Hershman. ..)

Whose History? Note that there is something of a stable “history” of new media art. This history is interesting as much for who it does not include as for who it does. .. The "art world" and "new media world" tend to have a version of their own: For example, typically included (especially in art versions of the history) are technologists such as Vannevar Bush, JCR Licklider, Norbert Weiner, Ted Nelson, Ivan Sutherland, Douglas Engalbart, Alan Kay, Tim Berners-Lee (all in New Media Reader.) Steve Jobs, Bill Gates. . Who were Vinton Cerf, Grace Hopper, E.F. Codd, Robert Metcalfe, John Warnock? Why? Bear this in mind throughout the quarter. Would you chose the history that I am giving?
